Sunshine North is bounded by the Western Ring Road in the north-west, the Maribyrnong River and Duke Street in the east, Ballarat Road in the south and the Sydenham railway line in the west.
Sunshine North is named for the area north of Sunshine, which was named after the Sunshine Harvester Works which dominated the landscape during the early 1900s.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1880s when the original Albion township was established. Significant development did not occur until the post-war years. The population increased slightly between 1991 and 2011 as some new dwellings were added to the area. Population growth is expected in the future, largely from continued development of the River Valley estate, on the former quarry site.
Sunshine North is a residential and industrial area.
Major features of the area include Victoria University (Sunshine Campus), Dempster Park, the Melbourne Knights Soccer Ground, Duke Street Reserve, Lloyd Reserve, Roussac Reserve and numerous schools.
