Settlement of the area dates from 1840, with land used mainly for farming, orcharding, grazing and dairying. Gradual growth took place during the 1870s and 1880s. Significant development occurred in the early to mid 1900s. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 1991 and 2011.
