Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming, orcharding, grazing and dairying. Growth took place in the late 1800s, spurred by improved access. Significant development occurred in the early to mid 1900s. The population declined slightly during the late 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011, largely a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
