Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with gradual growth in the 1870s and 1880s. Land was used mainly for farming, orcharding, grazing and dairying. Significant development occurred in the early to mid 1900s. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2011, largely a result of an increase in the share of people living in medium density housing.
