Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of Growth LGAs in NSW in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 26.2% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 17.2% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.5% and 22.1% respectively for Victoria.

The major differences between the age structure of Growth LGAs in NSW and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Primary schoolers' (10.7% compared to 8.6%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (22.2% compared to 20.6%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Babies and pre-schoolers' (7.3% compared to 5.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Seniors' (7.0% compared to 9.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2021, Growth LGAs in NSW's population increased by 344,630 people (33.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.9% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2011 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+80,630 people)
  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+49,814 people)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+43,840 people)
  • Primary schoolers (5 to 11) (+37,460 people)
