'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Knox in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (9,444 people or 12.2%)
  • Retail Trade (9,244 people or 12.0%)
  • Manufacturing (7,620 people or 9.9%)

In combination, these three industries employed 26,308 people in total or 34.0% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Greater Melbourne employed 12.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.1% in Retail Trade; and 7.7% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Knox and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (9.9% compared to 7.7%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (12.0% compared to 10.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in construction (9.8% compared to 8.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (7.1% compared to 9.0%)

The number of employed people in City of Knox decreased by 251 between 2011 and 2016.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2016 in the City of Knox were for those employed in:
