In the City of Knox, 25% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2016.

The City of Knox's language statistics show the proportion of the population who speak a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.

The City of Knox's language statistics should be analysed in conjunction with Country of Birth and Proficiency in English to assist in identifying specific cultural and ethnic groups in the area and the services required by the multicultural community.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the City of Knox in 2016 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 71.0% of the population spoke English only, and 25.2% spoke a non-English language, compared with 62.0% and 32.3% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the City of Knox was Mandarin, with 5.2% of the population, or 8,072 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of the City of Knox and Greater Melbourne in 2016 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Cantonese at home (3.1% compared to 1.7%)
  • A larger percentage speaking Mandarin at home (5.2% compared to 4.1%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Vietnamese at home (0.8% compared to 2.3%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Greek at home (1.2% compared to 2.4%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 7,269 or 23.0%, and the number of people who spoke English only decreased by 4,531 or 4.0%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the City of Knox between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:

  • Mandarin (+4,241 persons)
  • Cantonese (+722 persons)
  • Sinhalese (+556 persons)
  • Korean (+408 persons)
