Rowville is named after the Row family, early land holders in the area.

Settlement history

Development of the area dates primarily from the 1970s. Significant growth occurred from the 1980s. Rapid development took place from the early 1990s, with the population doubling between 1991 and 2001, and even faster growth between 2001 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area. Growth slowed considerably between 2006 and 2011 as few new dwellings were added to the area.

Rowville (North) is a relatively recent residential and industrial area.
