Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Growth LGAs in Victoria in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 52.6% of the population used English only, and 41.8% used a non-English language, compared with 57.3% and 37.4% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Growth LGAs in Victoria was Punjabi, with 5.1% of the population, or 75,540 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Growth LGAs in Victoria and Greater Sydney in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Punjabi at home (5.1% compared to 0.8%)
  • A larger percentage using Sinhalese at home (1.7% compared to 0.2%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (1.9% compared to 5.0%)
  • A smaller percentage using Cantonese at home (0.6% compared to 2.8%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 188,753 or 44.1%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 89,714 or 13.1%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Growth LGAs in Victoria between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Punjabi (+45,984 persons)
  • Hindi (+12,955 persons)
  • Arabic (+12,143 persons)
  • Urdu (+12,058 persons)
