Growth LGAs in Victoria's language statistics show the proportion of the population who use a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.
Growth LGAs in Victoria's language statistics should be analysed in conjunction with Country of Birth and Proficiency in English to assist in identifying specific cultural and ethnic groups in the area and the services required by the multicultural community.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Growth LGAs in Victoria in 2021 compared to National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 52.6% of the population used English only, and 41.8% used a non-English language, compared with 65.7% and 28.8% respectively for National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA).
The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Growth LGAs in Victoria was Punjabi, with 5.1% of the population, or 75,540 people using this language at home.
The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Growth LGAs in Victoria and National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) in 2021 were:
- A larger percentage using Punjabi at home (5.1% compared to 2.5%)
- A larger percentage using Sinhalese at home (1.7% compared to 0.7%)
- A larger percentage using Arabic at home (3.4% compared to 2.4%)
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 188,753 or 44.1%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 89,714 or 13.1%.
The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Growth LGAs in Victoria between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:
- Punjabi (+45,984 persons)
- Hindi (+12,955 persons)
- Arabic (+12,143 persons)
- Urdu (+12,058 persons)
