More Growth LGAs in Victoria male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Growth LGAs in Victoria's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Growth LGAs in Victoria in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (66,003 males or 17.9%)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (42,128 males or 11.4%)
  • Manufacturing (41,366 males or 11.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 149,497 males in total or 40.5% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) employed 16.8% in Construction; 9.8% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing; and 10.4% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Growth LGAs in Victoria and National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (11.4% compared to 9.8%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in construction (17.9% compared to 16.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in mining (0.3% compared to 2.7%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Growth LGAs in Victoria increased by 79,740 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Growth LGAs in Victoria were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+19,030 males)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+9,301 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+7,585 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+7,576 males)
