Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Growth LGAs in SA in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (7,387 females or 25.9%)
  • Retail Trade (3,788 females or 13.3%)
  • Education and Training (3,304 females or 11.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 14,479 females in total or 50.8% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) employed 23.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 11.8% in Retail Trade; and 12.5% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Growth LGAs in SA and National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (25.9% compared to 23.9%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in administrative and support services (5.4% compared to 3.6%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in retail trade (13.3% compared to 11.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.1% compared to 5.4%)

The number of employed females in Growth LGAs in SA increased by 5,470 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Growth LGAs in SA were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,922 females)
  • Education and Training (+823 females)
  • Administrative and Support Services (+346 females)
  • Retail Trade (+340 females)
