More Growth LGAs in NSW female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Growth LGAs in NSW's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Growth LGAs in NSW in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (67,785 females or 22.9%)
  • Education and Training (37,898 females or 12.8%)
  • Retail Trade (33,206 females or 11.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 138,889 females in total or 47.0% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Greater Perth employed 23.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 13.6% in Education and Training; and 10.7% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Growth LGAs in NSW and Greater Perth were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in financial and insurance services (5.9% compared to 2.8%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in manufacturing (4.8% compared to 3.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in mining (0.1% compared to 3.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in accommodation and food services (5.4% compared to 7.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Growth LGAs in NSW increased by 44,471 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Growth LGAs in NSW were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+17,317 females)
  • Education and Training (+8,162 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+3,993 females)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+2,986 females)
