More Growth LGAs in SA male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Growth LGAs in SA's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Growth LGAs in SA in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (4,951 males or 15.8%)
  • Manufacturing (3,753 males or 12.0%)
  • Retail Trade (3,123 males or 10.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 11,827 males in total or 37.8% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Greater Adelaide employed 14.2% in Construction; 9.4% in Manufacturing; and 8.7% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Growth LGAs in SA and Greater Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (12.0% compared to 9.4%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (3.7% compared to 1.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (3.9% compared to 7.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in health care and social assistance (5.3% compared to 7.9%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Growth LGAs in SA increased by 5,240 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Growth LGAs in SA were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+1,255 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+550 males)
  • Retail Trade (+443 males)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+346 males)
