More Growth LGAs in NSW male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Growth LGAs in NSW's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Growth LGAs in NSW in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (48,977 males or 15.0%)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (33,448 males or 10.2%)
  • Manufacturing (31,832 males or 9.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 114,257 males in total or 35.0% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Queensland employed 15.2% in Construction; 7.0% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing; and 8.2% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Growth LGAs in NSW and Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (10.2% compared to 7.0%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (4.9% compared to 2.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in mining (0.4% compared to 3.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.7% compared to 3.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Growth LGAs in NSW increased by 34,375 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Growth LGAs in NSW were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+6,195 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+5,638 males)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+4,540 males)
  • Construction (+3,521 males)
