Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Cockburn in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (9,087 people or 14.4%)
- Construction (5,855 people or 9.3%)
- Education and Training (5,817 people or 9.2%)
In combination, these three industries employed 20,759 people in total or 33.0% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Greater Melbourne employed 13.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.3% in Construction; and 8.8% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Cockburn and Greater Melbourne were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in mining (5.9% compared to 0.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (6.8% compared to 9.6%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (2.2% compared to 4.7%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in information media and telecommunications (0.6% compared to 1.8%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2021 in the City of Cockburn were for those employed in:

- Education and Training (+2,207 persons)
- Mining (+1,873 persons)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,349 persons)
