More Growth LGAs in NSW residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Growth LGAs in NSW's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Growth LGAs in NSW in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (86,403 people or 13.9%)
  • Retail Trade (61,107 people or 9.8%)
  • Construction (59,143 people or 9.5%)

In combination, these three industries employed 206,653 people in total or 33.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Wollondilly Shire employed 11.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 8.8% in Retail Trade; and 16.7% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Growth LGAs in NSW and Wollondilly Shire were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (5.4% compared to 2.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (13.9% compared to 11.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (6.7% compared to 4.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (9.5% compared to 16.7%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Growth LGAs in NSW increased by 137,374 between 2011 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2021 in Growth LGAs in NSW were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+34,971 persons)
  • Construction (+19,147 persons)
  • Education and Training (+17,026 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+14,922 persons)
