In 2021, 35,591 females in Growth LGAs in NSW were attending university. This represents 5.1% of the population, compared to 6.3% in Greater Adelaide.

The share of Growth LGAs in NSW's population attending educational institutions reflects the age structure of the population, as it is influenced by the number of children attending school; proximity to tertiary education, which can mean young adults leaving home to be nearer to educational facilities and; the degree to which people are seeking out educational opportunities in adulthood, especially in their late teens and early twenties.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the share of the female population attending educational institutions in Growth LGAs in NSW in 2021 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a higher proportion attending primary school, a higher proportion attending secondary school, and a lower proportion engaged in tertiary level education.

Overall, 9.5% of the female population were attending primary school, 7.1% of the female population were attending secondary institutions, and 7.8% were learning at a tertiary level, compared with 8.0%, 5.7% and 8.7% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

The major differences between the share of the female population attending learning institutions in Growth LGAs in NSW and Greater Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of females attending a primary school (any type) (9.5% compared to 8.0%)
  • A larger percentage of females attending a secondary school (any type) (7.1% compared to 5.7%)
  • A larger percentage of females attending a Government primary school (6.4% compared to 5.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of females not attending (67.2% compared to 71.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Growth LGAs in NSW's female population increased by 105,434 people (+17.7%). This represents an average annual change of 3.31% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the number of females attending education institutions in Growth LGAs in NSW, between 2016 and 2021 were in those who nominated:

  • Primary school (+11,199 females)
  • Primary - Government (+7,514 females)
  • Secondary school (+7,218 females)
  • TAFE/Vocational (+6,782 females)
