Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of St George Region in 2021 compared to Georges River Council area shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 40.7% of the population used English only, and 53.9% used a non-English language, compared with 42.1% and 53.2% respectively for Georges River Council area.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in St George Region was Mandarin, with 10.1% of the population, or 27,183 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of St George Region and Georges River Council area in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (5.3% compared to 3.7%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (10.1% compared to 12.8%)
  • A smaller percentage using Cantonese at home (7.1% compared to 9.4%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 4,706 or 3.4%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 6,125 or 5.9%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in St George Region between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Nepali (+4,308 persons)
  • Mandarin (-1,637 persons)
  • Spanish (+955 persons)
  • Portuguese (+858 persons)
