Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the Georges River Council in 2011 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 46.9% of the population spoke English only, and 49.3% spoke a non-English language, compared with 62.2% and 32.4% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the Georges River Council was Mandarin, with 10.8% of the population, or 14,575 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of the Georges River Council and Greater Sydney in 2011 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Mandarin at home (10.8% compared to 3.0%)
