Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of Casey Growth Area in 2016 compared to the City of Casey shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a similar proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 58.3% of the population spoke English only, and 36.1% spoke a non-English language, compared with 59.2% and 35.8% respectively for the City of Casey.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in Casey Growth Area was Sinhalese, with 5.8% of the population, or 1,850 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of Casey Growth Area and the City of Casey in 2016 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Sinhalese at home (5.8% compared to 3.0%)
  • A larger percentage speaking Filipino/Tagalog at home (2.6% compared to 1.3%)

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 9,917 or 581.6%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 13,225 or 238.7%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in Casey Growth Area between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:

  • Sinhalese (+1,654 persons)
  • Punjabi (+975 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+675 persons)
  • Persian/Dari (+625 persons)
