Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Some growth took place in the late 1800s. Residential development did not occur until the early 1990s. Rapid growth took place between 1991 and 2006, as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. Growth slowed between 2006 and 2011 as fewer new dwellings were added to the area.
Cranbourne West is a growing residential area, with rural areas in the north, south and west.
Major features of the area include Ranfurlie Golf Club, Sandhurst (Shopping) Centre, Bacchus Road Reserve, Everlasting Boulevard Reserve, Quarters Boulevard Reserve, Scarborough Avenue Reserve, Venn Grove Reserve and St Peter’s College Cranbourne.
This small area encompasses the suburb of Cranbourne West and a small part of the locality of Cranbourne South. The remaining part of the locality of Cranbourne South is included in the Cranbourne South small area.
