The three largest ancestries in Upper North Adelaide in 2016 were English, Australian and Irish.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in Upper North Adelaide regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Upper North Adelaide in 2016 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • English (1,540 people or 32.7%)
  • Australian (1,217 people or 25.8%)
  • Irish (459 people or 9.7%)
  • Scottish (407 people or 8.6%)
  • German (357 people or 7.6%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 3,980 responses in total, or 84.48% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in Upper North Adelaide and the City of Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of people with Australian ancestry (25.8% compared to 18.0%)
