Location and boundaries

CAD West is bounded by North Terrace, Montefiore Road, Festival Drive, Station Road and North Terrace in the north, King William Street in the east, Grote Street in the south, and West Terrace in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1836. Population was minimal until the 1870s. Rapid development took place in the late 1800s, continuing into the early 1900s. The population declined from the late 1940s, with gradual growth from the 1970s. Substantial development took place from the mid 1990s, with the population trebling between 2001 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area, particularly high-density housing.

Land use

CAD West incorporates part of Adelaide’s commercial heart as well as its most intensively developed entertainment precinct. The areas around the King William Street commercial spine feature corporate administration, financial and business services, while further south, Victoria Square functions as the Civic Centre for Adelaide and is the focus of judicial and administrative services. Hindley Street is a focus for nightlife and popular entertainment and features many restored 19th Century buildings. The western part of CAD West has an arts and education role. The West Terrace area is the western gateway to the city and features a range of commercial and residential uses, including service and manufacturing industries and bulky goods retailing. Light Square, in the centre of CAD West, provides a focus for commerce, leisure and education.

Major features of the area include Adelaide Convention Centre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Adelaide Casino, State Theatre Company, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Remand Centre, University of South Australia (Adelaide - City West Campus), TAFE SA (Adelaide Campus and Adelaide College of the Arts), Light Square, Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, Lights Memorial, Eynesbury College (Franklin Street Campus) and St Mary’s College.
