Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the City of Adelaide in 2016 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a larger proportion of people born overseas, as well as a larger proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 44.2% of the population was born overseas, and 36.5% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 26.3% and 17.0% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the City of Adelaide was China, where 13.0% of the population, or 2,877 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the City of Adelaide and Greater Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in China (13.0% compared to 1.8%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in Malaysia (3.4% compared to 0.6%)
  • A larger percentage of people born in Hong Kong (2.1% compared to 0.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in United Kingdom (4.8% compared to 7.4%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people born overseas increased by 1,750 or 21.9%, and the number of people from a non-English speaking background increased by 1,768 or 28.1%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2011 and 2016 were for those born in:

  • China (+1,223 persons)
  • Malaysia (-189 persons)
  • Hong Kong (+181 persons)
  • Brazil (+119 persons)
