In the City of Adelaide, 36% of people spoke a language other than English at home in 2016.

The City of Adelaide's language statistics show the proportion of the population who speak a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.

The City of Adelaide's language statistics should be analysed in conjunction with Country of Birth and Proficiency in English to assist in identifying specific cultural and ethnic groups in the area and the services required by the multicultural community.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the City of Adelaide in 2016 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 52.7% of the population spoke English only, and 36.3% spoke a non-English language, compared with 75.4% and 19.7% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the City of Adelaide was Mandarin, with 14.6% of the population, or 3,222 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of the City of Adelaide and Greater Adelaide in 2016 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Mandarin at home (14.6% compared to 2.1%)
  • A larger percentage speaking Cantonese at home (3.6% compared to 0.7%)
  • A larger percentage speaking Korean at home (1.4% compared to 0.3%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Italian at home (1.1% compared to 2.1%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 1,808 or 29.1%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 237 or 2.1%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the City of Adelaide between 2011 and 2016 were for those speaking:

  • Mandarin (+1,230 persons)
  • Cantonese (+135 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+125 persons)
  • Portuguese (+122 persons)
