Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of the City of Adelaide in 2011 compared to Greater Adelaide shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 58.0% of the population spoke English only, and 31.6% spoke a non-English language, compared with 78.8% and 17.3% respectively for Greater Adelaide.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in the City of Adelaide was Mandarin, with 10.1% of the population, or 1,992 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of the City of Adelaide and Greater Adelaide in 2011 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Mandarin at home (10.1% compared to 1.3%)
  • A larger percentage speaking Cantonese at home (3.4% compared to 0.7%)
  • A larger percentage speaking Korean at home (1.4% compared to 0.2%)
  • A smaller percentage speaking Italian at home (1.2% compared to 2.6%)

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of people who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 2,238 or 56.4%, and the number of people who spoke English only increased by 1,059 or 10.2%.

The largest changes in the spoken languages of the population in the City of Adelaide between 2006 and 2011 were for those speaking:

  • Mandarin (+900 persons)
  • Arabic (+250 persons)
  • Cantonese (+212 persons)
  • Chinese, nfd (+159 persons)
