The three largest ancestries in Lower North Adelaide in 2016 were English, Australian and Scottish.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in Lower North Adelaide regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Lower North Adelaide in 2016 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • English (843 people or 37.1%)
  • Australian (636 people or 28.0%)
  • Scottish (245 people or 10.8%)
  • Irish (231 people or 10.2%)
  • Chinese (143 people or 6.3%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 2,098 responses in total, or 92.42% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in Lower North Adelaide and the City of Adelaide were:

  • A larger percentage of people with English ancestry (37.1% compared to 25.2%)
  • A larger percentage of people with Australian ancestry (28.0% compared to 18.0%)
  • A larger percentage of people with Scottish ancestry (10.8% compared to 6.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of people with Chinese ancestry (6.3% compared to 21.2%)
