Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Rockhampton in 2021 compared to Regional QLD shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 20.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 17.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.0% and 19.8% respectively for Regional QLD.
The major differences between the age structure of Rockhampton and Regional QLD were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (6.2% compared to 5.3%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 5 to 9 (6.9% compared to 6.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (4.3% compared to 5.5%)

From 1996 to 2021, Rockhampton's population increased by 10,312 people (14.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.54% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+1,950 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+1,767 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+1,416 persons)
- 50 to 54 (+1,189 persons)
