Location and boundaries

Kawana is located to the north of the Rockhampton CBD. Kawana is bounded by Limestone Creek and Nuttall Street in the north, Yaamba Road (the Bruce Highway) in the east, Richardson Road and Splitters Creek in the south, and the Fitzroy River in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth was minimal until the 1920s and 1930s. Significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population increased during the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, and then declined slightly during the late 1990s. The population was relatively stable between 2001 and 2011, a result of few new dwellings being added and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Land use

Kawana is a residential, industrial and rural area, with housing generally located in the east.
