Industry sector of employment

More Limestone Coast region residents worked in agriculture, forestry and fishing than any other industry in 2011.

The Limestone Coast region’s industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Derived from the two Census questions:

'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Limestone Coast region in 2011 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (5,193 people or 17.2%)
  • Manufacturing (4,215 people or 14.0%)
  • Retail Trade (3,606 people or 11.9%)

In combination, these three industries employed 13,014 people in total or 43.1% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional SA employed 14.3% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 11.2% in Manufacturing; and 10.8% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Limestone Coast region and Regional SA were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (17.2% compared to 14.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (14.0% compared to 11.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in mining (0.4% compared to 3.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (9.6% compared to 11.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Limestone Coast region increased by 294 between 2006 and 2011.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2011 in the Limestone Coast region were for those employed in:

  • Manufacturing (-725 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+514 persons)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (-402 persons)
  • Construction (+212 persons)
