Five year age groups

There were 1,293 people over the age of 85 living in the Limestone Coast region in 2011, with largest age group being 40 to 44 year olds.

The Age Structure of the Limestone Coast region provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of the Limestone Coast region's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Five year age groups present a classic age profile of the population. Each age group covers exactly five years, which enables direct comparison between each group.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of the Limestone Coast region in 2011 compared to Regional SA shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 20.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.0% and 18.3% respectively for Regional SA.

The major differences between the age structure of the Limestone Coast region and Regional SA were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (5.8% compared to 5.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (4.7% compared to 5.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (6.4% compared to 7.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (3.8% compared to 4.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2011, Limestone Coast region's population increased by 852 people (1.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.27% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2006 and 2011 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+974 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (-804 persons)
  • 65 to 69 (+459 persons)
  • 70 to 74 (+398 persons)
