Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Liverpool LGA in 2021 compared to Western area - Greendale and Surrounds shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 39.5% of the population used English only, and 53.8% used a non-English language, compared with 60.1% and 33.1% respectively for Western area - Greendale and Surrounds.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Liverpool LGA was Arabic, with 13.1% of the population, or 30,501 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Liverpool LGA and Western area - Greendale and Surrounds in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Vietnamese at home (5.3% compared to 0.8%)
  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (13.1% compared to 8.5%)
  • A larger percentage using Hindi at home (3.4% compared to 0.6%)

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Liverpool LGA between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Arabic (+20,717 persons)
  • Vietnamese (+6,916 persons)
  • Assyrian/Aramaic (+5,593 persons)
  • Hindi (+3,018 persons)
