Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Liverpool was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 25 to 29 year olds, increasing by 1,312 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Liverpool in 2021 compared to Austral shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.5% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 12.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 25.5% and 9.7% respectively for Austral.

The major differences between the age structure of Liverpool and Austral were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (4.7% compared to 2.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (7.6% compared to 10.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (8.4% compared to 11.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (10.0% compared to 11.8%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Liverpool's population increased by 10,626 people (52.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.11% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
