There were 490 people over the age of 85 living in Clayton in 2016, with largest age group being 20 to 24 year olds.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Clayton in 2016 compared to City of Monash shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 9.2% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 9.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 15.8% and 17.2% respectively for City of Monash.

The major differences between the age structure of Clayton and City of Monash were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (27.6% compared to 9.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (13.6% compared to 7.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (11.2% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 45 to 49 (3.1% compared to 6.7%)

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2016, Clayton's population increased by 3,798 people (24.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 4.47% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2011 and 2016 were in the age groups:
