Name origin

Hughesdale is named after James Hughes, former Mayor of Oakleigh.

Settlement history

Development of the area dates primarily from the 1920s, aided by the construction of the railway line. Expansion continued during the post-war years. The population has increased gradually since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area and an increase in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Land use

Hughesdale is an established residential area, with a commercial area along Poath Road.

Major features of the area include Argyle Reserve, Galbally Park, Hughesdale railway station and a number of schools.
