This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Derived from the two Census questions:

'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Monash in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (9,728 people or 12.1%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (8,920 people or 11.1%)
  • Retail Trade (8,593 people or 10.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 27,241 people in total or 33.9% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Greater Melbourne employed 12.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.0% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 10.1% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Monash and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (11.1% compared to 9.0%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (9.9% compared to 8.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (5.8% compared to 8.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (3.6% compared to 5.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in City of Monash increased by 2,060 between 2011 and 2016.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2016 in the City of Monash were for those employed in:

  • Manufacturing (-2,003 persons)
  • Wholesale trade (-1,202 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+896 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+643 persons)
