Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Central Australia was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 1991 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 1,517 people.

The Age Structure of Central Australia provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of Central Australia's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Central Australia in 2021 compared to Victoria Daly Regional Council LGA shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 11.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.9% and 14.7% respectively for Victoria Daly Regional Council LGA.

The major differences between the age structure of Central Australia and Victoria Daly Regional Council LGA were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (8.1% compared to 5.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (9.3% compared to 7.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (5.5% compared to 8.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (6.0% compared to 8.2%)

Emerging groups

From 1991 to 2021, Central Australia's population increased by 3,906 people (10.3%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.33% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+1,517 persons)
  • 55 to 59 (+1,309 persons)
  • 65 to 69 (+1,235 persons)
  • 20 to 24 (-1,201 persons)
