Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Central Australia in 2021 compared to MacDonnell Regional Council LGA shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 19.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 11.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.6% and 9.9% respectively for MacDonnell Regional Council LGA.
The major differences between the age structure of Central Australia and MacDonnell Regional Council LGA were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 55 to 59 (6.2% compared to 5.3%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (6.0% compared to 8.1%)
Emerging groups
From 1996 to 2021, Central Australia's population increased by 3,531 people (9.2%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.35% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+1,553 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+1,217 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+1,175 persons)
- 20 to 24 (-1,006 persons)
