Dominant groups

In 2021, there were 16,572 separate houses in the area, 7,845 medium density dwellings, and 8,937 high density dwellings. In addition, there were 874 caravans/cabins/houseboats in the area.

Analysis of the types of dwellings in the City of Darwin LGA in 2021 shows that 47.8% of all dwellings were separate houses; 22.6% were medium density dwellings, and 25.8% were in high density dwellings, compared with 56.8%, 31.8%, and 0.4% in the Alice Springs Town Council LGA respectively.

In 2021, a total of 91.1% of the dwellings in the City of Darwin LGA were occupied on Census night, compared to 89.4% in Alice Springs Town Council LGA. The proportion of unoccupied dwellings was 8.5%, which is smaller compared to that found in Alice Springs Town Council LGA (10.1%).
