There were 993 people over the age of 85 living in Mornington in 2016, with largest age group being 65 to 69 year olds.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Mornington in 2016 compared to Mornington Peninsula Shire shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 28.5% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.3% and 24.6% respectively for Mornington Peninsula Shire.

The major differences between the age structure of Mornington and Mornington Peninsula Shire were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 75 to 79 (5.7% compared to 4.6%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (7.1% compared to 6.2%)
