Location and boundaries

Rosebud - Capel Sound - McCrae - Boneo - Fingal - Cape Schanck is bounded by Port Phillip Bay in the north, the suburbs of Dromana and Arthurs Seat, Waterfall Gully Road, the locality of Main Ridge, Hyslops Road, Wallermerriyong Road, Main Creek, the southern edge of Greens Bush and Main Creek in the east, Bass Strait in the south, and an alignment to the east of the St Andrews Beach settlement, Sandy Road, a north-south alignment following Weeroona Street, the future Mornington Peninsula Freeway alignment and Truemans Road in the west.

Name origin

Rosebud is thought to be named after the schooner "The Rosebud". McCrae is named after Andrew McCrae, an early land holder in the area. Cape Schanck is thought to be named after Captain Schanck, an English navy captain and contemporary of Matthew Flinders.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Growth took place in the 1870s and 1880s, when the township of Rosebud was established, founded on the fishing industry. Significant development occurred from the post-war years. The Rosebud area has long been a holiday location for Melbournians, while the Cape Schanck area has seen significant development in recent years. The population of the area generally increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.

Rosebud - Capel Sound - McCrae - Boneo - Fingal - Cape Schanck is a rural and residential area, with some small commercial areas. The residential areas are located mainly in the north, along Port Phillip Bay.
