The size of Mornington's labour force in 2016 was 10,720, of which 4,148 were employed part-time and 5,824 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in Mornington in 2016 compared to Mornington Peninsula Shire shows that there was a similar proportion in employment, as well as a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 94.8% of the labour force was employed (50.4% of the population aged 15+), and 5.2% unemployed (2.8% of the population aged 15+), compared with 95.1% and 4.9% respectively for Mornington Peninsula Shire.
