Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of Clayton in 2011 compared to City of Monash shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 29.9% of the population spoke English only, and 64.7% spoke a non-English language, compared with 52.1% and 44.4% respectively for City of Monash.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in Clayton was Mandarin, with 17.5% of the population, or 2,724 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of Clayton and City of Monash in 2011 were:
