This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Ocean Reef's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Ocean Reef in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Technicians and Trades Workers (527 males or 23.6%)
- Professionals (445 males or 19.9%)
- Managers (439 males or 19.7%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 1,411 males in total or 63.2% of the employed male resident population.
In comparison, the City of Joondalup employed 25.1% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 21.0% in Professionals; and 17.5% in Managers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Ocean Reef and the City of Joondalup were:
- A larger percentage of males employed as Managers (19.7% compared to 17.5%)
- A larger percentage of males employed as Sales Workers (7.2% compared to 6.0%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (23.6% compared to 25.1%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed as Professionals (19.9% compared to 21.0%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed males in Ocean Reef decreased by 125 between 2011 and 2021.
The largest change in the occupations of male residents between 2011 and 2021 in Ocean Reef was for those employed as:
- Technicians and Trades Workers (-85 males)
