Name origin

Sorrento is thought to be named after a seaside town in Italy.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Development was minimal until the 1930s, following subdivision. Rapid growth took place from the 1970s, with growth slowing during the early 1990s. The population has been relatively stable since the mid 1990s, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
