Name origin

Hillarys is named after Bertram John Hillary, an early resident of the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1930, although growth was minimal until the 1970s. Significant development occurred during the 1980s, spurred by the boat harbour development. Rapid growth continued during the early 1990s, with expansion continuing from the mid 1990s, but at a slower rate, a result of fewer new dwellings being added to the area.

Land use

Hillarys is a relatively recent residential area, with a commercial area in the north-east and substantial parklands along the coast.
