This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Ocean Reef in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Construction (431 males or 19.3%)
- Mining (242 males or 10.9%)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (216 males or 9.7%)
In combination, these three industries employed 889 males in total or 39.9% of the total employed male resident population.
In comparison, Western Australia employed 14.2% in Construction; 11.3% in Mining; and 7.4% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.
The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Ocean Reef and Western Australia were:
- A larger percentage of males employed in construction (19.3% compared to 14.2%)
- A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (9.7% compared to 7.4%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.4% compared to 2.9%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (4.4% compared to 6.6%)

The largest change in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Ocean Reef was for those employed in:
