The 2021 Census for the first time asked about service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF), which inlcudes the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force. This can be a combination of full-time paid employment (regular service) and part-time (reserves service). The question also asks whether each person is a current serving member or has past service with the ADF. Defence is a major employer in some parts of Australia and understanding the characteristics of this employment can be important in planning for the community. Issues affecting veterans may also be important even where there are no defence bases in the area. This data should be looked at in conjunction with Employment Status and Volunteering data.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the defence force service status of Spring Farm in 2021 compared to Macarthur Region shows that there was a lower proportion of people with past ADF service, and a higher proportion of people with current ADF service.
The major differences in the defence force services between Spring Farm and Macarthur Region are:
