In 2021, the largest age group in Greater Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 35 to 39 year olds, increasing by 57,945 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.2% and 17.2% respectively for Australia.

The major differences between the age structure of Greater Sydney and Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (8.0% compared to 7.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (7.9% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (3.9% compared to 4.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (4.5% compared to 5.1%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Greater Sydney's population increased by 407,147 people (8.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.63% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 35 to 39 (+57,945 persons)
  • 70 to 74 (+45,929 persons)
  • 10 to 14 (+40,876 persons)
  • 60 to 64 (+33,231 persons)
