Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 17.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 22.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.2% and 17.2% respectively for Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Regional NSW and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (5.9% compared to 4.6%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (6.4% compared to 5.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (5.9% compared to 7.3%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (5.9% compared to 7.2%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, Regional NSW's population increased by 186,115 people (7.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.37% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 70 to 74 (+33,787 persons)
- 35 to 39 (+22,533 persons)
- 75 to 79 (+21,589 persons)
- 30 to 34 (+20,956 persons)
